Healthy Schools

At Bean Primary School we encourage the children to adopt a healthy lifestyle as a key priority.

Pupils are able to have a bottle in class so that they have regular access to water. This must be water only and not water with squash or cordial. There are also two water fountains around school which the children can use during playtimes.

All Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children have fruit or vegetables provided in class daily for snack time. In Key Stage 2, if children wish to bring a snack from home to eat at morning break they may only bring in fruit or vegetables. Fruit is also provided.

The school Gardening Club learn how to plant seeds to grow fruit and vegetables, which they take care of. When they are ready, the children harvest and eat the fruit or vegetables that they have nurtured.

In line with our Healthy Schools ethos, instead of parents/carers sending in sweets to celebrate a child’s birthday, they may wish to donate a book to their child’s class as a memento of the special day.

In order to secure a good quality food provider, the school has taken the decision to introduce a 100% uptake of hot dinners from reception class. This currently affects Years R and 1.

As well as a nutritious meal choice, children have access to a rich salad bar and fresh bread each day which staff encourage the children to enjoy. Water is served daily to all children at lunchtimes.

We ask that packed lunches are well balanced and healthy. They should contain:

  • Starchy foods such as bread, rice, potatoes, pasta etc.
  • Protein foods such as meat, fish, eggs etc.
  • A dairy item such as cheese or yoghurt.
  • Vegetables or salad and a portion of fruit.

As a nut free school we remind parents not to send in nuts or sandwiches with peanut butter.

It is important that we encourage the children to eat at least 5 fruit or vegetables per day and we actively promote ‘eating a rainbow’ a day.
